Smoking Alert Declared on Friday the 13th by VdF-NRW

On Friday, October 13, the Association of Fire Brigades in NRW e.V. is participating in the nationwide smoke alarm day. This annual event, which has been taking place since 2006, serves as a reminder for homeowners to prioritise the safety of their homes and loved ones.

Under the motto "Friday the 13th can be your lucky day", the day emphasises the importance of regularly testing smoke alarms. The Association of Fire Brigades in NRW, along with Provinzial Insurance, stresses that installation alone is not enough; regular testing is also crucial.

Fires often occur during the day, but statistically, there are more fire deaths at night. This is primarily due to smoke inhalation, as 90% of fire deaths are not caused by flames but by the harmful fumes. Carbon monoxide in smoke can quickly create a life-threatening situation, leading to unconsciousness and ultimately death.

Smoke alarms play a significant role in home safety, especially during the dark season when spending more time at home becomes important. Properly installed and functioning smoke alarms can provide "luck in misfortune" in case of a fire.

The Association of Fire Brigades in NRW recommends visiting their website www.vdf-nrw.de for answers to questions about smoke alarms. Maria Koch at the Association of Fire Brigades in NRW e.V. can be contacted via email at [email protected] for further information.

The organization that committed to an information campaign about the importance of regular smoke detector checks on the nationwide Smoke Detector Day is the Feuerwehr Euskirchen (Fire Department of Euskirchen). The website www.provinzial.de/rauchmelder provides information about smoke alarms from Provinzial Insurance.

Regular testing of smoke alarms, according to the manufacturer's instructions and at least once a year, is crucial for their proper functioning. Smoke alarms should be installed in all bedrooms, children's rooms, corridors leading to the staircase, and to the outside to ensure maximum protection.

By taking these simple steps, homeowners can significantly reduce the risk of fires developing unnoticed and endangering lives. So, make sure to test your smoke alarms regularly and turn Friday the 13th into your lucky day.
