Social Media Divides After Charlie Kirk Shooting, Raising Concerns About Violence and Mental Health

Following the tragic shooting of Charlie Kirk, social media platforms have split into mirrored worlds, with starkly contrasting reactions. While some users express tributes and anger, others use the event to spread taunts and conspiracy theories. This divide raises serious concerns about the potential for violence and the mental health impacts of excessive social media use.

Research has shown that the danger of violence escalates when users' distress and grievance intersect with algorithms that favor provocative content. A 2025 study linked higher social media use to increased depressive symptoms over time, while a 2024 meta-analysis in JAMA Pediatrics found a positive association between social media use and internalizing symptoms, including anxiety and depression. The US Surgeon General echoed these concerns in a 2023 report, warning of the profound mental health risks to youth from social media use.

Engagement-based feeds often amplify posts that stir anger, particularly towards those with differing beliefs or values. This is due to machine-learning systems predicting what will keep users engaged, with inputs including watch time, clicks, shares, and replies. Confirmation bias and emotionally charged content, such as anger and moral outrage, can drive replies and 'rage-clicks', further fueling engagement. However, the European Union's Digital Services Act requires large platforms to disclose their recommender logic and offer a non-profiling option, as well as genuine choice in feed options, to mitigate these issues.

The stark division on social media following the Charlie Kirk shooting underscores the urgent need for responsible platform use and regulation. Educating users about algorithm literacy, promoting mental health awareness, and enforcing transparency and choice in feed options can help mitigate the risks associated with excessive social media use.
