Stricken Mare 'Lady' succumbs to fate in Hell's Kitchen, authorities claim

A 15-year-old horse named Lady collapsed and died in Hell's Kitchen, New York City, on Tuesday afternoon, reigniting a long-standing debate over the city's horse-drawn carriage industry. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. at West 51st Street and 11th Avenue. The NYPD's mounted unit is investigating the incident, with no arrests made in connection with Lady's death as of yet. Christina Hansen, a spokesperson for the carriage horse industry, confirmed Lady's death at the scene. The viral video of another horse, Ryder, struggling in the street last summer had already raised concerns about the welfare of these animals. Ryder, who was old and in poor health, was reportedly forced to keep working until collapse. Prosecutors argued this, but the driver was found not guilty of animal abuse in a Manhattan jury trial. Ryder was euthanized two months after the incident. Animal rights groups, including NYCLASS, say the latest incident underscores the need for Ryder's Law, a stalled bill that would replace horse-drawn carriages with electric ones. Edita Birnkrant, executive director of NYCLASS, called the latest incident a failure to protect horses from abuse. New Yorkers are reportedly tired of seeing horses worked to death on the streets. Union leaders representing carriage drivers support reforms but oppose an outright ban. Fousseni Eroune, a witness, reported that Lady suddenly fell after stopping at a light. The horse owner who cared for Lady is not explicitly mentioned in the search results. Hansen stated that Lady was in good health, and the death might have been due to a heart attack, aneurysm, or stroke. Lady will undergo a necropsy at Cornell University to determine the cause of death. The incident occurred near the location where Ryder collapsed in the summer of 2022. City Hall officials are reviewing the incident, with a spokesperson stating that they are committed to ensuring the welfare of all animals in the city. As the debate over the horse-drawn carriage industry continues, it is clear that the welfare of these animals remains a pressing concern for many New Yorkers.
