Brighton Midfielder James Milner Reveals Injury Hardships Ahead of Return

James Milner, Brighton & Hove Albion's midfielder, has shed light on the grueling journey he underwent following a severe knee injury that nearly sabotaged his career. Coming back from the brink of inactivity, Milner made a triumphant return to the pitch during the team's 4-1 win against Tottenham.

The 39-year-old player started the first three games of the 2024/25 season but was forced to exit the field after a knee injury during the 1-1 draw against Arsenal on August 31. Milner's subsequent surgery to address the knee injury left him bedridden for the better part of the season.

Speaking to Brighton's official website, Milner detailed the extent of his injuries and the challenges he faced during recovery. "A contact injury in training before the Arsenal game left my knee stable, but I was lucky to get a second chance with my hamstring," he explained. "However, during the operation, a nerve got damaged, causing me to lose mobility in my foot and toes."

Milner's prognosis was grim, as he struggled to regain control over his limbs. It was only on December 31 that he saw the faintest signs of improvement. "It's been a long, tough road," Milner said, crediting the medical staff—particularly physio Sean Duggan—for their unwavering support and dedication.

Despite the setbacks, Milner remained optimistic throughout the process, using his experience to encourage and mentor his teammates during the grueling season. Now back on the field, he expressed his relief and gratitude for being part of the team's second-half comeback victory at Tottenham.

As for his future at Brighton, Milner is as determined as ever. "I still have plenty left in me. I feel good, and I'd like to keep playing. My aim is to be here for another season and support the team as much as possible," Milner said, expressing enthusiasm for the potential the squad holds for next season, especially up-and-coming players like Carlos Baleba.

The appreciation for Milner's presence and leadership was evident in the post-match celebrations, where teammates Carlos Baleba and Yankuba Minteh carried the recovered veteran onto the pitch to join the traveling supporters. "It's an incredible group, and I just want to help them improve as much as possible," Milner added.
