Sun protection warning system safeguards swimmers from sunburn in Saarbrücken's outdoor swimming pools

In an effort to raise awareness about sun protection and contribute to health prevention, the city of Saarbrücken has introduced a UV warning system at its public baths. This system, currently operational at the combined baths in Altenkessel and Fechingen, the outdoor pool in Dudweiler, and the Totobad, is part of the nationwide "WATCH OUT" project.

The UV warning system works by displaying the daily peak value of UV exposure in Saarbrücken, based on the internationally recognized UV index. This index ranges from one to eleven and indicates the current strength of ultraviolet radiation. A color-coded sign at the outdoor pools provides information on suitable protective measures, including using sunscreen, wearing appropriate clothing, and seeking shade.

An integrated QR code on the sign allows bathers to access the current UV index value and additional information directly on their smartphones. Visitors can obtain further information about the UV warning system from the information provided at the baths and on the official website of the capital city of Saarbrücken.

The protective measures suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO) vary depending on the risk level. For instance, when the UV index is low (0-2), minimal protection is required, but sunglasses and sunscreen can be used as precaution. As the UV index increases, so do the recommended protective measures. When the index is high (6-7), it's advised to reduce time in the sun between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., apply broad-spectrum sunscreen every two hours, and wear protective clothing.

It's important to note that the number of hospital treatments for skin cancer is particularly high in outdoor pools due to UV rays being intensified by water reflection. Statistics from the Federal Statistical Office show an 87.5 percent increase in hospital treatments for skin cancer in the last two decades.

Gabriele Scharenberg-Fischer, responsible for Saarbrücken's public baths, warns that sunshine poses health risks due to ultraviolet rays (UV rays). By implementing this UV warning system, the city aims to protect its citizens from these risks and encourage responsible sun behavior.

If you require specific details about Saarbrücken's public baths UV warning system, it may be necessary to contact the facility directly or check local health and safety information from Saarbrücken municipal sources.
