Thirty out of the thirty-eight migrants who arrived in the Algarve region have been relocated to Faro and Porto.
38 Migrants Arrive in Vila do Bispo, Algarve
A total of 47 migrants—25 men, 6 women, and 16 minors, including a 1-year-old baby—arrived in Vila do Bispo, southern Portugal, on August 8, 2025. The migrants, primarily from Morocco, were found in a debilitated state, showing signs of dehydration and hypothermia.
The group of 38 migrants arrived on a wooden boat at Boca do Rio beach, while the remaining 11 migrants, who arrived in a separate group, were housed at a sports pavilion in Sagres. Both groups were escorted by the GNR (National Republican Guard) upon arrival.
Upon arrival, 10 of the migrants were hospitalized for medical observation, due to the severe conditions they were in. The Portuguese authorities have increased maritime patrols along the Algarve coast to detect and intercept further irregular migrant entries by sea.
The court in Silves ruled that the 38 adult migrants would be extradited back to Morocco, their country of origin, with minors exempt from court hearings due to their protected status under Portuguese and international law. The repatriation process will be managed by the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) after identification and court hearings are completed. Authorities have dismissed possibilities of asylum requests in this case.
The adult man among the migrants was recently discharged from the Hospital in Portimão and will be presented to a judge in Lagos on Wednesday. The adult man was the only one among the 38 migrants who remained to be heard in court.
The lack of vacancies in the centers prompted the Vila do Bispo chamber to make an appeal due to the inability to accommodate the migrants for a prolonged period in the sports pavilion. All migrants were ordered by the court to return to their country of origin, Morocco, within the legal timeframe.
The migrants sought basic necessities upon arrival, receiving some aid from locals before official assistance arrived. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Portugal in managing irregular migration, particularly along its southern coast.

There is a need for enhanced health-and-wellness services for the migrants, as ten of them were hospitalized due to their severe conditions upon arrival. To ensure their fitness-and-exercise needs are met, suitable facilities need to be found to accommodate them during their stay in Portugal.
