Toxic gas has leaked in Magdeburg - Toxic Gas Leak in Magdeburg Hospitalizes Two
Emergency services rushed to a residential building in Magdeburg today after a toxic gas leak. The police cordoned off the area, and two residents were hospitalized.
The incident began when the fire department was called to extinguish a basement fire. However, the substance kept reigniting, leading them to suspect a chemical reaction. It was later discovered that someone had mixed chemicals for pest control, resulting in a toxic byproduct, Monophosphan. The gas leaked from the basement, causing two residents to fall ill and be taken to the hospital.
Emergency services swiftly responded, packaging and removing the hazardous materials. They also checked the building and examined twelve personnel as a precaution. Some complained of headaches. The fire department gave the all-clear around noon after neutralizing the chemicals. Monophosphan is hazardous to health and can be life-threatening in strong contamination or inhalation.
The police believe the leak was an accident, with the chemical mixture intended for pest control. The name of the person or institution responsible is not yet specified. The Magdeburg control center advised residents in the affected area to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed during the incident.
