In the bustling U.S., views on how President Trump handles transgender issues are split, with around half of adults approving – a record high for a president with overall approval ratings of around 40%.

Yet, support for particular policies regarding transgender people isn't uniform. A new poll, conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, found that while there's more support than opposition for allowing transgender individuals to serve in the military, most oppose transgender students using bathrooms that correspond to their gender identity in public schools and using government programs for gender-affirming health care for transgender youth.

Schuyler Fricchione, a 40-year-old stay-at-home mom from Virginia, is among those against government-funded gender-affirming care for youth. She isn't keen on promoting major changes, but emphasizes the importance of understanding every individual's dignity and worth. "I'm still figuring things out," she admits.

Most adults concur with President Trump that a person's sex is determined at birth. The survey finds substantial agreement among Republicans, but Democrats are divided, with about half stating that gender identity can differ from biological characteristics at birth – a view that contradicts mainstream medical groups asserting that extensive research suggests sex and gender are better understood as a spectrum rather than a binary definition.

A movement opposing the recognition and rights of transgender people, who make up around 1% of the nation's population, has been a significant part of President Trump's tenure – a matter that continued during his campaign. He has signed orders to classify people by biological sex and oust transgender service members, actions currently being challenged in court.

The public is divided on various issues, and many exhibit neutral feelings. For example, around 40% support mandating public school teachers to inform parents if their children identify as transgender or nonbinary in school, and similar proportions favor allowing transgender military service and oppose it. Tim Phares, a 59-year-old Kansas resident who predominantly votes Republican, is among those undecided about transgender military service.

This month, the Supreme Court allowed Trump's administration to enforce a military ban while legal challenges proceed, reversing previous court decisions. Most are opposed to government coverage of gender-affirming care for transgender youth, with around half objecting to such coverage for those over 19 and two-thirds opposing it for those under 19.

In contrast to the political divisions among Democrats, Isabel Skinner, a 32-year-old politics professor in Illinois, expresses unwavering support for transgender rights, citing her personal experiences as a bisexual and pansexual individual and her relationships with transgender people. Skinner is among the minority favoring transgender students using school bathrooms that match their gender identity – a practice banned in at least 14 states in the last five years.
