Turkish soldiers meet tragic demise during rescue endeavor involving methane gas explosion in North Iraq
In a heartbreaking incident, five Turkish soldiers lost their lives on July 6, 2025, during a rescue operation in northern Iraq. The soldiers were part of a unit searching for the remains of a fellow infantry officer who had been killed by Kurdish militants in May 2022.
The incident took place at an altitude of 852 meters, in a cave that was previously used as a hospital by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The cave had been cleared by Turkish forces prior to the incident. During the search, 19 soldiers were exposed to methane gas, a colorless, odorless, and highly flammable gas that can cause asphyxiation in high concentrations. Despite immediate medical intervention and hospitalization, five soldiers succumbed to the gas exposure, with rescue operations ongoing in the area.
This tragedy occurred within the "Claw-Lock Operation" region, an area designated for an ongoing Turkish military campaign against the PKK in northern Iraq that began in April 2022. The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Germany, the EU, and the US, has been involved in a decades-long insurgency against Turkey, with the conflict spilling over into neighboring Iraq and Syria. Turkey has established several military bases in northern Iraq to counter the PKK's presence, which has historically used mountainous and cave terrain for operations including medical facilities.
Notably, in May 2023, the PKK announced its intent to disband and renounce armed conflict, signaling a new peace initiative. Fighters are expected to start handing over arms soon, marking a significant potential step towards resolution. However, this tragedy underscores the continued dangers Turkish forces face in the region amid the complex security environment.
The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced the latest incident on the X platform. The Turkish military presence in Iraq continues to be focused on the PKK, with its headquarters still located in the Kandil Mountains. Despite the recent loss of soldiers, the Turkish military is continuing its operations in Iraq, demonstrating a commitment to maintaining security and stability in the region.
Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the fallen soldiers, who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. They will be remembered as heroes.
