Freed from Confinement: Exploring the Impact of Modern Footwear on Women's Health

Documentary filmmaker Becky Hutner recently released her latest project, Unbound - a film created in partnership with barefoot shoe company Vivobarefoot, now available on YouTube. This multi-faceted film wears many hats but never overpowers, as each component is delicately woven together. The driving force behind this production is Hutner's passion for impact storytelling and the question of why our society pays little attention to foot health.

Known for her work in environmental, social justice, and cultural climate documentaries, Hutner aims to create narratives that inspire positive change. She shared her journey and the inspiration for Unbound, reminiscing, "I gravitate towards projects with the potential for a positive impact on the world."

First crossing paths in 2023 over her documentary Fashion Reimagined, Hutner and I connected again as she promoted her pioneering work. Fashion Reimagined follows the journey of Vogue's Best Young Designer of the Year winner, Amy Powney, as she creates an entirely sustainable apparel collection from prize money. Don't miss this thought-provoking film!

Born and raised with a love for movies, Hutner attended USC Film School in Los Angeles and initially planned to break into the world of fictional filmmaking. However, a transformative documentary class piqued her interest, leading her down the path of factual storytelling. After a decade of editing, she found her stride directing documentaries.

After her successful work on an environmental documentary called Revolution, Hutner's career took a significant turn with Fashion Reimagined. Vivobarefoot, a fan of her work, approached her with an intriguing concept for Unbound, which would later become one of her most captivating projects.

Unbound's central theme questions societal neglect of foot health, using the stories of 17 women - the lives of three in particular: Dr. Rena Harris, Aicha Mckenzie, and Tati Gabrielle - to explore the intersections between footwear, fashion, and cultural expectations for women's feet. The film delves into the history of women's shoes and the impact they have on our feet - an overlooked aspect of women's fashion until now.

According to Hutner, "It was a huge casting process, taking months on and off. We had categories for our main characters - an athlete, a doctor who was a foot specialist, and someone in culture. After extensive research, we found the right people who could contribute authentically to the film."

The groundswell of support for Unbound demonstrates the growing interest in exploring foot health and the negative impacts modern footwear can have on women. As Hutner moved through the creation process confident in her project's potential impact, she felt that Unbound "ticked all the boxes for me." This film presents a new wave in advertising, as the brand cedes control to the artist while still achieving their objectives.

A film paid for by a brand but driven by creative freedom, Unbound presents a unique opportunity to learn about foot health concerns without the hard sell often associated with sponsored content. The partnership allows the brand to benefit from creating a high-quality film that stands on its own merit, while viewers gain knowledge that could potentially improve their health. It's a win-win situation, demonstrating the power of empathy and compassion in advertising.

Now, with her latest project under her belt, Hutner continues to pursue her passion for impact storytelling. In the future, she plans to release a second feature documentary about the UK's first organic and community-owned farm, as well as other projects centered on social justice and positive change. Keep an eye out for her next thoughtful examination of the world we live in, sure to challenge assumptions and offer solutions for a better future!
