Unwind your muscles and boost your flexibility with this accomplished athlete's 20-minute stretching regimen

Emma Lawson, the second fittest woman on earth at the 2023 CrossFit Games, has shared a 20-minute mobility training routine with Fit&Well readers. This routine, provided by the stretching app Pliability, is designed to release muscle tension, increase flexibility, and aid in stress management.

The routine includes a series of poses, each to be held for one to two minutes. The Pigeon pose, for example, involves starting on hands and knees, bringing the right leg forward, laying the shin in front, sliding the left leg out, and leaning the torso forward over the shin or knee. The Lizard pose is similar to the Dragon pose but involves placing hands (or forearms) to the inside of the right foot. The Dragon pose, on the other hand, involves stepping the right foot forward, extending the left leg behind, placing hands on the right knee, and sinking into the front knee.

Another key part of the routine is the Down dog to active lizard complex. This involves starting in a down dog pose, stepping the right foot forward, extending the left leg behind, pushing back up to down dog, and repeating on the left side. This complex is to be repeated for two minutes. The Down dog to seal complex, which involves starting in a down dog pose, dropping the hips to assume seal pose, taking a deep breath, and pushing back up to down dog, is also repeated for two minutes.

The routine also includes the sumo squat, where one stands with feet wider than shoulder-width apart, pushes hips back, bends knees, and sinks into a deep squat position, keeping chest proud and back straight. Another pose is the wide stance down dog, where the hips are pressed into the sky as in down dog pose, heels are pressed into the floor, feet are taken as wide as possible, knees are softened, head hangs, and arms are straight.

Cody Mooney, the director of performance for stretching app Pliability, endorses the importance of mobility training. He emphasises that no special gear is needed for mobility training; it can be done with minimal time. The routine is to be performed on a yoga mat.

Interestingly, the professional CrossFit athlete who used this 20-minute mobility routine was not Emma Lawson, but Tia-Clair Toomey. Nonetheless, Lawson's endorsement of the routine makes it an attractive option for those seeking to improve their flexibility, reduce muscle tension, and manage stress.

The routine is simple, effective, and requires minimal equipment, making it an ideal choice for those looking to incorporate mobility training into their fitness regimes. Whether you're a seasoned CrossFit athlete or a beginner, this routine could be the perfect addition to your workout routine.
