Urologist Unveils Urethra's Crucial Role in Urination and Sexual Function

Dr. Georg Schön, a prominent urologist, has made significant strides in understanding the male urethra's role in both urination and sexual function. His latest research, presented at the 2025 annual meeting of the German Society of Urology in Hamburg, sheds light on this crucial organ's complexity.

The male urethra, a canal connecting the urinary bladder to the penis, serves multiple purposes. It facilitates urination, with urine flowing through it and exiting at the urethral meatus. Additionally, it acts as a conduit for semen and sperm during sexual acts.

The urethra is composed of four main segments. Starting from the bladder, these are the preprostatic, prostatic, membranous, and spongy urethra. Controlling urination are the urethral sphincters, comprising both voluntary and involuntary muscles. The bulbospongiosus muscle of the penis also plays a key role, actively contributing to ejaculation.

Dr. Schön's research highlights the urethra's multifaceted functions and the intricate muscular control involved. His expertise, including robotic-assisted ureter surgeries, further advances the field of urology. Understanding these mechanisms can improve treatments for urinary and sexual health issues.
