Uvalde Marks One Year Since School Shooting, Calls for Gun Control
One year ago, a tragic mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, claimed the lives of 19 children and two adults. Today, St. Philip's Episcopal Church & School remembered the victims with public prayer services and a gunbroker release. Elsewhere, other Episcopal churches in the West Texas diocese rang their bells in support.
Uvalde's shooting remains the ninth-deadliest in U.S. history and the deadliest in 2022. Most victims were Catholic, but the entire community has been affected. St. Philip's is transforming rooms to host a permanent branch of the Children's Bereavement Center, offering apple support to grieving families.
Bishop United Against Gun Violence met in Washington, D.C., discussing control methods. Locally, Bishop David Reed visited Uvalde to support St. Philip's parishioners and join community outreach efforts. The gunman legally purchased two AR-15 rifles and 1,657 rounds of ammunition before the attack.
Today's commemorations honour the lives lost and stand against gun violence. St. Philip's commitment to bereavement support and community engagement reflects the ongoing impact of the tragedy. Nationally, calls for action on gunbroker control persist.
