Production of vegetarian and vegan food increased - Vegan & Vegetarian Food Production in Germany Soars, Led by Lower Saxony's 111% Growth

The production of vegetarian and vegan food preparations resembling sausages has seen a significant rise in Germany. Between 2019 and 2024, these vegan products accounted for 5% of the production value in the 'Other food (excluding beverages)' category, totalling 276 million euros.

In 2021, this share even reached 5.6%. However, there was a temporary decrease of 6.1% in production in 2023. Despite this dip, the overall growth from 2019 to 2024 has been substantial, a 130.4% increase.

Looking specifically at Lower Saxony, the production of vegan and vegetarian food has doubled. In 2019, the region produced 18.2 million kg, which jumped to 41.9 million kg by 2024. This growth is largely due to the collective efforts of the food industry in the region, with several companies contributing significantly to this increase.

The rise in vegan and vegetarian food production, particularly in Lower Saxony, reflects the growing demand for plant-based alternatives. Despite a slight dip in production in 2023, the overall trend shows a substantial increase, indicating a promising future for this vegan sector.
