Warning Signs of Unsafe Cosmetic Procedures in the UAE: Medical Professionals Issue Caution Against Affordable Procedures and Unfulfilled Guarantees

In the vibrant cityscape of the United Arab Emirates, the pursuit of beauty and self-improvement has led to an increasing demand for plastic surgery. However, with this growing trend comes the need for vigilance and proper precautions.

Dr Rani Umul Khair, a specialist plastic surgeon at Dubai London Hospital Jumeirah, underscores the importance of patience and thorough preparation. She emphasizes that potential patients should not rush into surgery and may require psychiatric evaluation or counselling before proceeding. Dr Khair also advises that at least six months should pass after breastfeeding or weight stabilization for 'mommy makeover' procedures.

When choosing a physician, Dr Khair suggests asking to see before-and-after photos of similar cases to understand the surgeon's technical skill and aesthetic approach. Dr Vikesh Vij, a plastic surgeon at Kaya Clinics, echoes this sentiment, stressing the importance of doing one's homework on the surgeon, checking qualifications and experience.

Negligence in medical conduct by plastic surgeons in the UAE can make them liable for any harm caused, as per a recent ruling by the UAE Federal Supreme Court. Dr Vikesh Vij, in particular, follows a strict rule of not performing procedures if he believes the risks outweigh the benefits.

Unfortunately, some experts have come across botched and unnecessary surgeries during their practice. Dr Maurizio Viel, a plastic surgeon at Cornerstone Clinic, has witnessed high-risk techniques being used in unnecessary surgeries, such as facelifts on patients who were too young. Many of these patients have undergone surgeries in facilities that do not meet proper sterile standards.

Dr Chandra Bose Vellani Thamunni emphasizes the importance of patient compliance and understanding of the procedure. She encourages patients to ask questions and seek clarification to ensure they are fully informed about the process and potential outcomes.

Dr Vikesh has noticed infections, asymmetries, irregularities, and scarring issues in such surgeries. He attributes many botched surgeries to patients seeking a 'cheap' fix, highlighting the importance of prioritizing quality over cost.

It's crucial to remember that cosmetic surgeries are not considered urgent medical procedures in the UAE. Patients must declare their entire medical history to surgeons for proper health assessment, as per Dr Maurizio. By taking these precautions and choosing reputable surgeons and facilities, individuals can significantly reduce the risks associated with plastic surgery and achieve their desired results safely and effectively.
