Pregnant Woman Gives Birth on the Street of Carregado, Refused Follow-up at Maternity Hospital in Lisbon

A 28-year-old woman gave birth on the street of Carregado on Monday, after being refused follow-up at the Maternity Alfredo da Costa in Lisbon. The incident was handled by the Volunteer Firefighters of Alenquer, who arrived at the scene at 10:38 am following an alert from the Centros de Orientação de Doentes Urgentes (CODU).

According to the mother of the pregnant woman, the refusal was due to a lack of resources to accommodate more pregnant women in late pregnancy. The family initially called Saúde 24, but were told to go to the hospital by car, despite the woman being a high-risk patient. After a long wait, they called 112 for help. The call was answered in English, as communication was in English at the time.

The birth had already taken place by the time the Volunteer Firefighters of Alenquer arrived. A medical vehicle from Torres Vedras arrived later, after the mother and baby were inside the ambulance of the Alenquer firefighters. The mother and baby were then taken to the Hospital of Santarém. The Volunteer Firefighters of Alenquer were not involved in the delivery of the baby.

The young woman had asked to be followed by the Maternity Alfredo da Costa, in Lisbon, about three weeks ago. She was being followed at the Health Center of Alenquer at the time of the incident. The search results do not contain any information about the reasons for refusal or the specific hospital's policies regarding high-risk pregnancies.

The news was reported by Correio da Manhã (CM) and SIC. Both mother and baby were well after being assisted by the Alenquer firefighters and the medical vehicle from Torres Vedras. The precise reason for the refusal cannot be confirmed without specific information on this case or the hospital's policies.

Despite the request for follow-up at the Maternity Alfredo da Costa in Lisbon, the pregnant woman had to give birth on the street of Carregado due to a lack of resources. This incident highlights the need for improved women's health care, particularly in the area of health-and-wellness, as science and medical resources are essential for the well-being of expectant mothers and their newborns.
