In a significant move towards promoting inclusivity and safety within the firefighting community, the Lower Saxony Fire Department Association, in collaboration with district women's representatives, is set to develop a guideline for fire department leaders regarding pregnancy.

The call for this change was made by the state women's representative, who highlighted a concerning gap in knowledge among fire department leaders about how to behave during pregnancy. This initiative comes as the number of female firefighters and leaders continues to rise, according to Peter Dettmer, the district fire chief of Rotenburg (Wümme).

The development of this guideline was discussed during a recent gathering at the Zeven fire station in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district. The event, which also saw the sharing of news from the Lower Saxony Fire Department Association by Sabine Schröder and her deputy Tanja de Freese, also marked the announcement of a unique psychological emergency care law being drafted for Lower Saxony.

In addition to this, a nationwide forum for fire department women is planned for October 2025, in East Frisia. The organiser of this conference is yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to be an important platform for discussions and solutions regarding the unique challenges faced by women in the firefighting industry.

Meanwhile, efforts are already underway to address issues of sexual discrimination, violence, and harassment within the fire department. An assistance offer has been created by Sabine Schröder and the district women's representatives to provide support for those affected.

Various workshops have been conducted in districts, focusing on services for technical assistance or self-defense, specifically for women. These workshops aim to empower female firefighters and ensure their safety.

The new fire ordinance in Lower Saxony, including a new fire uniform, is set to be published in the next few weeks. The Lower Saxony Fire Department Association will also have a stand at the Interschutz trade fair in Hannover next year.

The Lower Saxony Fire Department Association, along with public insurers and the fire department accident insurance, will also be organising "Fire Department in Motion" in 2025. This event promises to be a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive and safe environment for all firefighters.
