The 2023 Carol Nachman Prize will be shared between two distinguished researchers: Professor Dr. Christopher Buckley from the UK and Professor Dr. Dirk Elewaut from Belgium. Meanwhile, Professor Dr. med. Dr. phil. Heiner Raspe from Münster will receive the smaller version, the Carol Nachman Medal, in recognition of his significant contributions to rheumatology. Traditionally, the winners would be celebrated in a grand ceremony at Wiesbaden Town Hall, but the event has been postponed due to the ongoing pandemic until next May.
The esteemed prize is named after its founder, Carol Nachman, a long-standing gaming concessionaire who was an honorary citizen of the state capital. Since 1972, the award has honored 82 internationally recognized scientists, with the Wiesbaden Casino providing more than €1.6 million over the years to fund the prize. The prize is also supported by AbbVie Germany, a biopharmaceutical company that aids in the treatment and research of rheumatologic diseases.
In previous years, the Prize has been bestowed upon many eminent rheumatologists, including Professor Iain McInnes of the University of Glasgow in 2025. The Prize is considered a significant honor, recognizing those who have made transformative advances in the field of rheumatology.
